Full Home Porcelain Tiling Installation - Kitchen, Living Areas & Hallway
Recommended by Torben Schmidt Kitchens, this project involved tiling an entire ground floor using large-format Italian porcelain. From careful removal of existing flooring over underfloor heating to full surface preparation and installation, the result is a clean, modern finish carried seamlessly throughout the home.
The Brief
Following a recommendation from Torben Schmidt Kitchens, we were commissioned to tile the entire ground floor of the property. The scope extended beyond the kitchen to include the main living areas and hallway, creating a consistent, modern finish throughout.
The client wanted a clean, contemporary look using large-format porcelain tiles, with a focus on durability, minimal maintenance and a seamless flow between spaces. Explore similar options in our kitchen tiles, flooring tiles and bathroom tiles collections.
Careful Removal & Preparation
The project began with the removal of existing tiles and carpet across the entire area. As the property featured underfloor heating, this stage required extra care to avoid any damage to the system beneath.
Once cleared, the full area was levelled using a screed to ensure a perfectly flat surface. An anti-fracture tiling membrane (D-Mat system) was then installed across the floor, helping to prevent movement and protect the finished tiles long-term.
Large-Format Porcelain Installation
The chosen tile was a cement-effect Italian porcelain in a 60 x 120 format, ideal for achieving a modern, open feel. The tiles were laid using a random bonded pattern, which not only enhances the visual flow but also helps minimise waste across large areas.
A soft grey grout was selected to complement the cement-effect finish, subtly blending with the tile while still defining the layout. This approach keeps the look clean, understated and consistent throughout the home.
Finishing & Detailing
Once the installation was complete, the entire area was thoroughly cleaned using professional tile cleaner and a wet vacuum to ensure a flawless finish.
Perimeters and expansion joints in doorways were carefully siliconed using colour-matched Mapei equivalents, maintaining consistency with the grout while allowing for natural movement across the floor.
Seamless Flow Across the Home
By using the same porcelain tile throughout the kitchen, living areas and hallway, the finished space feels larger, brighter and more connected. The large-format tiles reduce grout lines and create a continuous visual flow from one area to the next.
The Result
This whole house tiling project delivers a clean, contemporary finish built for real living. From careful preparation over underfloor heating to the use of high-quality Italian porcelain and precise installation techniques, the result is both practical and visually striking.
The client was so pleased with the outcome that we have since been instructed to install new oak doors throughout the property, along with additional projects including the first of two bathroom installations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you tile over underfloor heating?
Yes, but it requires careful preparation. Existing flooring must be removed without damaging the system, and appropriate materials such as anti-fracture membranes should be used to protect the installation.
Why use large-format porcelain tiles?
Large-format tiles reduce grout lines and create a more seamless look. They are ideal for open-plan spaces and modern interiors, offering durability and easy maintenance.
What is an anti-fracture membrane?
An anti-fracture membrane, such as D-Mat, is installed beneath tiles to absorb movement in the substrate and prevent cracking. It is especially important over underfloor heating systems.
Do you need expansion joints in tiled floors?
Yes, expansion joints are essential in larger tiled areas. They allow for natural movement and prevent stress on the tiles, helping maintain the longevity of the installation.
