A Complete Transformation by Blackman Rowe

Overview

Blackman Rowe recently completed a full wet room refurbishment in Falmouth for a homeowner who had been experiencing significant leaking issues. The project involved a detailed investigation, full structural repair, and expert installation of a new waterproof system using premium materials.

This case study explores how the Blackman Rowe team resolved the problem, the steps taken to ensure long-term durability, and the outcome for the client.

The Challenge

The client had recently moved into a modern apartment in Falmouth, only to discover that the wet room was leaking through the ceiling into the room below. The original tanking system had failed, causing water damage and making the bathroom unusable.

On inspection, the Blackman Rowe team found that the wet room had been poorly constructed. The drain had not been sealed or waterproofed properly, and the original installer had attempted to form the wet room tray out of plywood. Over time, the plywood had become rotten, and the timbers beneath it were not strong enough to support the weight of the tiles or users.

The homeowners, a retired couple, needed a fast, reliable and lasting solution that would restore full use of the space and prevent any future leaks.

Our Approach

Blackman Rowe began by carefully removing the existing tiles and investigating the full extent of the damage. Once the condition of the substructure was assessed, the team reinforced the base with new, larger structural timbers to ensure it could safely support the new installation.

Next, the team installed one of Blackman Rowe’s 1200x1200 premier wet room trays, designed specifically to provide a solid, level, and waterproof foundation. This was followed by full tanking with a waterproofing membrane and corner tape, creating a secure, watertight barrier across the entire wet room floor and lower walls.

Before continuing to the next phase, the new drain system was tested for 24 hours to ensure complete watertight integrity. Once confirmed, tiling began using 60x60 Stucco Porcelain Textured Ivory tiles, chosen for their quality, durability and clean modern look.

For adhesion, the team used Rapid Flex S2 adhesive, a high-performance flexible tile adhesive designed for maximum movement tolerance, especially important on first-floor installations. The tiles were then grouted using Mapei Moon White grout for a clean, elegant finish.

Materials and Products Used

Each product was selected for its strength, flexibility, and long-term waterproofing performance - ensuring the new wet room would not only look beautiful but also stand the test of time.

The Result

The result was a fully functioning, leak-free wet room that the clients could finally enjoy with confidence. The refurbished space is both practical and visually impressive, offering a modern finish that complements the apartment’s style.

The retired couple can now use the bathroom worry-free, knowing that the structure beneath is strong, sealed, and built to professional standards. The Blackman Rowe team successfully delivered a long-term solution that restored the home’s comfort and value.
